i have a trial coming up and the defense atty is going to challenge the validity of the test & instrument accuracy because for the first 3 attempts at calibration, the intox ec ir 2 displayed "high air blank" and there is no documentation in the manual, etc addressing this issue. there was another deputy who had sprayed cleaning solution all over one of the counters near the instrument while cleaning and it took about 15 minutes for the intoximeter to have clear air blanks during calibration. i can find no literature to support the validity of the "high air blank" for trial. help!

Hello "rsutton", Thank you for your inquiry. It sounds like your EC/IR II is doing what it is supposed to do in this situation. A "High Blank" message indicates that the instrument detected the presence of alcohol during a "Blank Check" and is waiting for that to clear before taking a subject sample. The instrument is designed to prevent any residual or ambient alcohol from affecting a subject test, accuracy check or calibration. It is normal for the instrument to detect ambient alcohol vapors from some cleaning solutions and hand sanitizer, both of which are commonly found in the testing area, but should be kept away from the instrument.
For more information or documentation specific to your state or country's instrument, you may contact us at 314-429-4000.
